CONTEMPORARY HEAVY ASSAULT RIFLES

Assault rifles appeared during World War II. The concept was to give the ground soldier a weapon which could fire rapidly while in close combat, and have good precision for long range firing. Heavy rifles, like the first Kalashnikov rifles, or weapons like the G-3, have been progressively replaced by light caliber assault rifles, like the M-16, which are more accurate and less lethal : an incapacitated soldier causes more trouble to an army than a dead one.
"Bullpup" configuration, with the magazine behind the grip like the Enfield IW rifle or the FAMAS, has been preferred since the seventies for weapons that have needed to be compact, for use by parachutists or for urban and jungle combat.

The extremely popular FAL uses extensively composite materials, bringing the weight down. Its automatic fire is not very accurate, so semiautomatic is preferred by most.

G3 is a heavy assault rifle. It is reliable, accurate and powerful. Used by NATO forces throughout the world, it can be found especialy in Australia, Mexico, Bangladesh, in Central Africa and in Norway.

Technicaly close to the AK-47, this Israelian rifle has proved its efficiency during several conflicts in the Middle-East. There exists a 5,56 version, which has an accuracy of +1, and a 30 round magazine. Extended 35 round magazines for 7,62 and 5,56 can be found.
